I started Gray Matter Designs in February of 2007, and I find myself re-designing the site for a fourth time. That might seem a bit excessive, but in the world of design & marketing, it is completely necessary. Sites must adapt in an ever-changing world. In 2007 I designed the GMD site entirely in Flash. Back then, it was all the rage… plus it showed off my actionscripting skills. Today, Flash is the dusty, old program that hasn’t been opened in years. HTML5 and CSS3 have almost made Flash obsolete. Building “Alpha” (as I call the original site) in Flash was a great experience, but not something I would have done if I could have predicted the explosion of smartphones and tablets.
“Beta” was a fun site to build. It was a standard HTML/CSS site, nothing too complex. I tried to play up the “gray matter” part with quotes about brains, and a 3D brain that interacted with the navigation. I related parts of the brain with sections of the site. It was quite the learning experience.
In January of 2010, I found myself in between full-time jobs and decided to take GMD to the next level. I again, re-designed the site to make it look like a full-time business instead of a side project. New graphics, a re-designed logo, jquery sliders… it had it all. I started a GMD twitter account (@gm_designs), created a Facebook page, wrote a mission statement… it was a big deal. I really liked “Gamma”.
In fact, I liked “Gamma” so much that the design isn’t that much different in “Delta”. The big change in “Delta” is moving everything to WordPress and incorporating a blog. Transferring everything into WordPress was not without its challenges, but I’m very pleased with the new site. So welcome to “Delta”… the very latest graymatterdesigns.com. Enjoy it now, because there’s no telling how long it will be relevant.
